As in most service oriented businesses, our customers have many differing questions.
I've compiled a small list of the most frequently
asked, in order to help you save time and be better
informed of our services. If your question is
not on this list, please call us at (416) 431-6054
or e-mail us at info@1000cards.net and we will
be happy to answer it for you.
| Q1: |
What kind of Files
do you take? |
| |
Please use industry standard graphics
programs such as Photoshop, Quark, Illustrator
and Corel Draw. If you are using any other
programs like Pagemaker, Power Point, etc.
please save the file as a tiff, bmap, eps,
or jpeg.

| Q2: |
Can I send you a Word
file? |
| |
No you can't because it loses all formatting
when imported into our graphics programs.

| Q3: |
What is bleed? |
| |
When you print a color card on white
stock you don't want the card to have a
white edge if your business card has an
image or background that goes to the edge
of your card. In order for us to print you
a card that is 2x3.5 or 4x6 etc. You need
to design your card larger than it will
be when it is cut down. A 2x3.5 card should
be set up at 2.125x3.625 with the image
or color extending to fill that entire space.
Add .062 inches all the way around your
card for bleed. If you don't do this and
you leave a white border or black border
for bleed, when your card is cut down it
will have an edge of white or whatever color
you put in there. If you have a photograph
some of the image HAS to get cut off so
you don't get a white edge. Accept that
and design accordingly. If you want to leave
a border make sure it's a 1/4 inch thick
otherwise it will not look even when it
is cut down. See our templates for detailed
instructions.

| Q4: |
What size file should I make for my card? |
| |
For business cards, you should make your
card 2.125 x 3.625 which will be cut down
to 2” x 3.5”. The extra 1/16th
inch around the card is required for cutting
purposes and is called a bleed. For 4”
x 6” postcards you will make your
file 4.125” x 6.125”. For all
other sizes, just add the required bleed
of 0.125 inch.
Note:
Make sure your type is set in at least another
1/8th inch from the final cut down size
of card.

| Q5 |
What kind of paper are my cards printed
on? |
| |
All business and postcards are printed
on 12 pt. Cornwall stock which is coated
on both sides. In addition, we UV coat the
front of your card to stop the ink from
smudging and to give your cards an added
shine.

| Q6 |
What program(s) should I use to make
my card? |
| |
We recommend that you use the following
programs. Quark Xpress, Adobe Photoshop,
Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw. Each program
has its own strength and weakness. We recommend
that you view and setup your pictures files
in Adobe Photoshop (make sure you have calibrated
your monitor) and your type in Quark/Illustrator/Corel
Draw. We also accept Illustrator and Corel
Draw files, however they are not the best
for displaying accurate colors. If you don’t
have any of these programs, we can still
accept files if you are able to save them
as a .tiff or .eps format at 300dpi quality.
Note:
Save all your images at 300 dpi resolution
and in CMYK colors not RGB colors.

| Q7 |
How do I calibrate my monitor? |
| |
Call us at (416) 431-6054,or e-mail us
or fax us with a return address and ask
for a calibration disk and/or postcard.
You will need Photoshop to do so.

| |
| Q8 |
What resolution should my images be
in? |
| |
To ensure that your pictures come out
as crisp and clear as you see them on
your monitor, we highly recommend that you
save all your .tiffs at 300 dpi.
Note:
Do not expand, blow up or re-image a low
resolution image to 300 DPI. (This process
does not enhance the actual picture it just
creates a larger file size.) Sometimes you
can bypass this rule if you have a large
( ie. 8" x 11") low resolution
picture (72 DPI) and you want to reduce
its size to (1 x 1.38) and increase its
resolution to 300 dpi.

| Q9 |
How fast can I get my cards done? |
| |
Our turnaround time is a Friday to Friday,
1 week basis. This is the fastest in the
printing industry for traditional high quality
offset gang printing.

| Q10 |
When can I give you my
digital file so that I can pick my cards up
on Friday? |
| |
This is a very important question. Many
customers misinterpret our 1 week turnaround
time. They think if they bring their file
to us by Monday they should be able to pick
up their cards the following Monday. However,
we print on a Friday to Friday basis. During
the week, we collect our customers files
and make sure they are correct and usable
so if any corrections need to be made they
can be done by Friday's deadline.
Although the deadline is Friday, we highly
recommend that you send us your files sooner.
We can not guarantee that space will be
available for you on our flats if your file
comes in Friday. There is always a mad rush
on Friday so it's 1st come 1st serve basis
until our flats are full. In addition, all
orders require a 50% deposit to go to print.
For our long distance customers, from the
USA or across Canada, who have sent us files
by e-mail or via our ftp site, we need 100%
payment. Print out and fax a Visa or Master
Card Slip or call us and we'll fax you one.
Note:
We do not hold a spot on our flats without
a deposit or full payment. Nor do
we work on your files until we receive a
complete order form. Please ensure
your file names that are submitted are written
on your order form so we can link your files
to your order.

| Q11 |
Can I get my cards rushed and pay extra? |
| |
We are pleased to offer the fastest turnaround
time to all our customers. Average turnaround
times are at least three weeks. However,
there are always customers who for one reason
or another require their cards faster than
a week and are willing to pay extra. Unfortunately
due to the printing nature of our business,
cards can't be printed any faster than we
do them. Let me tell you why.
The reason we can’t print faster
is because we give you more for your money.
We don’t print by using low quality
digital printing, but high quality offset
printing. After collecting your files by
Friday and getting you to proof it by noon
Monday, we prepare our flats for film. Film
is needed to print your cards at a high
quality 175 line screen and 3386 DPI resolution.
On Tuesday/Wednesday your cards are printed
on our Komori offset press. On Wednesday
evening your cards are UV coated (an added
expense we incur that other printers don’t,
since it enhances the finished quality of
your cards- by keeping the ink from smudging
and giving your cards a glossy finish).
On Thursday we cut and box your cards. By
Friday they are ready for pickup or shipping.
I hope this helps clarify why it takes a
week. The earliest cards are ever
shipped out is Thursday evening.

| Q14 |
Do you print in all colors? or 4 Colors? |
| |
I've had to answer this questions personally
myself a few times. Our logo Go 4 Color
has two meanings. It means Go for Color,
and Go four Color.
Firstly, we'd like prospective customers
to spice up their business cards by using
color, artwork and pictures. Secondly it
means we print using 4 colors CMYK (Cyan,
Magenta, Yellow and Black) ink colors. These
four different colored press inks allow
us to print the entire spectrum of colors.
So you can print as many colors as you want
as long as they are CMYK colors.

| Q15 |
Can I have full color on
the back of my business cards or postcards? |
| |
Yes, we print color on the back as well.
We do not UV coat the back of the cards
so you can still write on them. Color on
business cards is $50 Cdn. or $30 U.S. on
postcards it's $75 Cdn. or $50 U.S. Color
Cards have a bi-weekly turnaround rather
than friday to friday.

| Q16 |
What do I do if I don’t
have a computer file? |
| |
Many prospective customers don't have
the resources or know how to create a computer
file but would like to get postcards and
business cards in color. We can setup a
card for you if you know what you want on
your card. (We recommend you stop by our
office to look through our card book to
get some more ideas or ask us to mail you
some samples.) It is common for customers
to bring us artwork, photos, slides, etc.
they'd like scanned for their cards and
a layout of text on paper. We then make
a digital file for you which costs you only
$50.00 plus scanning charges.
Note:
We do not design your card. You need to
think of what you want on your card and
we'll make it happen. However, if you want
someone to create a unique design (logo,
etc.) you can hire a professional Graphic
Designer, who will be able to create it
for you. We can recommend one if you would
like.

| Q17 |
I live in the United States,
do I have to pay those horrendous Canadian
taxes? |
| |
Fortunately No! Free Trade has brought
down the tax barriers and US customers can
freely place orders without worrying about
paying tax.

| Q18 |
I need only 500 cards,
not 1000. Will you print me 500? |
| |
Unfortunately we can’t. Our minimum
run is for 1,000 business or postcards.
But our price for 1,000 cards is the same
if not lower than most people charge for
500 cards.

| Q19 |
Can you print my business
or postcards on a different color paper stock? |
| |
For larger businesses who order 30 or
more business cards or 12 or more postcards
we can. Otherwise our routine printing is
on 12 pt Cornwall, double coated, white
stock.

| |
| Q20 |
Do you print in pantone
colors? |
| |
We recommend that you convert your pantone
colors into the nearest CMYK equivalent.
However, we can print spot colors on your
cards but it is expensive because you do
not share the cost of this special color
with the other customers on the flat.
